Back In 2011, (SAS) Scandinavian Airlines introduced a “Smart Pass” pilot program to some of their frequent fliers by giving them custom NFC tags to stick on the back of their phones with the aim of making the process of checking-in and boarding a flight “smoother and more time-efficient”.

Those tags not only replaced their boarding passes, but also allowed them to access self-service machines, Fast Track, lounges, tax-free shopping, the priority security check, and even enter the VIP-style lounge. The trial period “clearly showed that customers enjoyed the product and that SAS is once again meeting customers’ expectations” according to Lena Rökaas, SAS’ vice president of product and customer service.
